The pediatric waiting room at Westchester Medical Center serves as the site for this volunteer-driven family literacy program.  Children are read to, are given a free book to take home, and their families are given information on resources to open up the world of literacy and reading to the entire family.  As part of the national Reach Out and Read Program, Open Book trains pediatricians to ‘prescribe’ reading as part of the well-child visit. This program has expanded into White Plains Hospital (2006).
