Strengthening
the Community
The JCY develops
intergenerational programs to meet the needs of the community.
Focusing on the assets of Seniors, the JCY creatively engages the older
adult population in meaningful, volunteer, recreational, social,
educational and cultural programs. These programs have effectively
enriched the lives of a growing senior population.
Focusing on the
literacy needs of our Youth, the JCY develops intergenerational programs
that improve the reading and writing abilities of the students K-12 and
provide opportunities for student community service.
SOS Program (Services Outstationed to Seniors)
The JCY has
partnered with other agencies to effectively enrich the lives of our
growing senior population and have had an important impact in combating
isolation and loneliness in Senior Residences throughout Westchester
County. The JCY has adopted sixteen Senior Adult Residences and
apartment buildings and four Senior Centers. Senior volunteers reach out
to other seniors to have them join their peers in stimulating cultural,
social and educational activities. These programs have successfully
engaged more that 700 seniors on a regular basis. Colleges throughout
Westchester are joining our seniors in learning together, advocating,
and supporting each other.

Youth and Education and Civic
Awareness
The Yonkers Public School system has
historically been riddled with difficult battles over race,
desegregation and the difficult challenges of serving a student body in
which student need is greater than district resources. The JCY has
responded to the educational and social needs of students through a
variety of programs and has been involved in the on-going process to
improve and strengthen public education in Yonkers, to remove barriers
of learning and to improve communication among the various institutions
that serve the youth of Yonkers.
Inter-Group Relations
Professionals from the Jewish Council of Yonkers
participate in various organizations that promote tolerance and
inter-group awareness. In particular, the JCY has been actively involved
in the annual Yonkers Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for Nonviolence
Commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday. JCY staff has served as judges on
the poster and essay contest open to all Yonkers Public School students
and has sat on the event planning committee.
The JCY also holds an annual Chanukah celebration at City Hall.
The JCY will
be working with the Hispanic community to improve relations, running
joint programs in the city of Yonkers
Special Projects
When a special communal need exists, the Jewish Council of Yonkers has
often spearheaded efforts to meet that need. The JCY, in partnership
with Westchester Jewish Community Services and the City of Yonkers,
raised $113,000 to renovate a neighborhood part, providing day-care and
other children with opportunities for recreation that would otherwise be
unavailable to them. This community betterment project required the
tremendous organizational, fundraising and collaborative skills of all
the volunteers and professionals of the JCY.
